That fact that we live in a city, planned and created by Le Corbusier’s makes us proud. Chandigarh is now vying for the World’s Heritage City Status by UNESCO. We couldn’t have asked for more. Well-demarcated city squares with open spaces and green belts have been attracting people from India and Abroad to make their dwelling in this City Beautiful. But since a city is not just about brick & motor but more about people who inhabit it and its culture and ethos it must like all living organisms grow organically whilst not severing the umbilical chord with its creator completely and in the process losing all its signature characteristics which makes it an unique city in the world. Doubly so, when one is talking about the periphery development.
The soul of the city seems to be missing in these urban clusters. It calls for a great deal of planning as distinguished from mere ‘designing’ to retain the original character of the city in the periphery as well as the satellite towns. Another major cause of concern as modernity creeps in the city in form of malls and multiplexes; we have to find a middle path so that we do not lose out on tradition completely. Heritage buildings of the city need to be preserved and conserved. The Le Corbusier Museum in Sector 26 is a fine example of this.
